As any of you who have read the messages over at our Yahoo Fantasy League page knows by now, seantoo is upset over my recent roster moves and believes them to be against the rules. We had this debate earlier this year, when SRYD was picking up free agent starters to increase his chances of winning some pitching categories. Clearly, there is a difference of opinion still as far as what should and shouldn't be allowed. First off, let's look at the official rules. seantoo points to the page on Fair Play & Sportsmanship, stating that he thinks I broke rule 4, and possibly rule 5. Rule 4 states "No owner will make any roster moves (including waiver claims, trade proposals, etc.) whose sole purpose is to hamper the play of other owners." Now if gr8fldave (whose Yuck the Fankees team is done for the year) were to have picked up a bunch of starters, the rule would apply, since that could only harm other teams and not benefit his. My moves were made solely with the intent of improving my team (see rule 1). And while improving my team does, in a sense, hamper my opponent, that is not its “sole purpose. I don't believe Rule 5 applies either ("No owner will take any action whose purpose is to, in any way, interfere with fair play in a league.") Again, my purpose is not to "interfere with fair play" but to give myself a possibility of winning. Now, here's some background information on what has transpired to understand the rationale behind my recent roster moves. First off, I came into the finals having decided on this game plan: [list:c383c821bd][*:c383c821bd]I had 5 closers (vs. 4 for seantoo) that I believed would win me the saves category (especially since they totaled 13 saves during the one-week semis). [*:c383c821bd]I had an excellent trio of starters in Peavy, Oswalt, and Prior who, along with the positive influence of the closers, would give me a good chance of winning the Ks, ERA and WHIP categories. (Pitching was my strength this year, with a winning pct of .682 compared to .591 in the hitting catgories). I figured I could win ERA (in which I was 17-6 this year) and least one other. That would give me 3 points in pitching. [*:c383c821bd]In hitting, I decided to build my lineup around speed and run scoring, especially after I managed to pick up Jimmy Rollins (thanks, Guru!). With speedy leadoff hitters Rollins, Brian Roberts, Randy Winn and Grady Sizemore, I figured to take SBs and runs and have a good shot at the other categories. [*:c383c821bd]If I only managed the 3 points in pitching and 2 in hitting, the ERA tiebreaker would get me the victory.[/list:u:c383c821bd](OK, now you all know how to kick my butt next year! ;) ) Then bad stuff started happening. Brian Roberts gets injured and is out for the year. Randy Winn stops stealing bases and hitting HRs. Several of my pitchers have flameouts. Saves leader Chad Cordero gets shut down with a week to go in the season. I can’t buy a win, whereas seantoo is getting them from his closers. But thanks to the offense provided by Hafner and Rollins, the finals were neck-and-neck going into this week. Then, ARod steals 4 bases to go with 1 from last week (he only had 15 all year before that!), while Rollins doesn’t steal at all against Mike Piazza. Bye-bye SBs. On Tuesday, seantoo goes 4 for 4 in saves, and adds another 2 on Wednesday, putting the saves category out of reach. Yesterday, Tom Glavine puts up an unreal performance, while the much-improved Sunny Kim totally tanks, giving seantoo the lead in Ks and adding another win to his total. So I’m now down 3-7, and need to win back at least 2.5 points. Facing insurmountable deficits in saves, ERA, and WHIP, I’ll need to get those 2.5 points from Wins, Ks, SBs and OBP. To complicate matters, I had only two starters going this weekend, whereas seantoo’s team had seven starts coming. Furthermore, even though both Peavy (being rested for NLDS) and Prior are done for the year, I can’t swap them for other pitchers, since they are on Yahoo’s Can’t Cut List (I’m also stuck with Tejada, even though he’s been horrible in the second half (.750 OPS)). So I had two choices: roll over and play dead, or do whatever I could to try and get the points I need. I chose to go down fighting. That meant dropping my closers and picking up starters that could better help me get wins and Ks. If anyone else here agrees with seantoo and believes that I have violated the rules, I invite them to respond to this, and I’ll modify my roster for the weekend. Otherwise, it’s “Play On!

Bob*So I had two choices: roll over and play dead, or do whatever I could to try and get the points I need. I chose to go down fighting. Otherwise, it’s “Play On!* Wow, Bob wow this is a transparent offer, don't even waste your breath replying. You sound alot like SlappyMcBoblips last year, he was beat and acted out of desperation yet his 'reason' sounded ALOT like what you offered above. Never mind you have 45 more at bats than me, or a full day of at bats. Injuries, INJURIES, I had 3 ACES go down the week before the playoffs, Holliday, Harden & Sheets among other injuries, no crying here, I did the best I could in choices I did not take everyone I possibly could, I dealt with it with integrity IMO you did not. There is no money involved only bragging rights. You took DAMN near every pitcher pitching the final days 15+starts in three days where I did not even have the chance to counter, violation of rule 4 CLEAR AND CUT! Who cares about this beside you me and possibly SRYD? Obviously no-one which is why your proposal is a false one. By the time anyone could have answered your proposal it would have been to late, the needle and the damage done. Even if you pull off the win you are not the champ, you & I both know that, despite any possible excuse you can come up with. I'd rather you say, 'Sean integrity means nadda to me, I'll lie cheat and steal to win'. At least I'd respect that becuase then I know the devil I'm dealing with. My team beat yours this time. You acted out of desperation. I thought I was beat by SRYD in the semis was about to congratulate him (Fair and square he did not use quantity to win) then fortune changed hands, I got lucky and won if only you could have been as graceful, shame shame shame.
