Hey...even though it's early January, we should probably start thinking about setting up the new league for the coming year. First, please post here if you're interested in being a part of the league. Secondly, please let us know if you'd be available for a live draft, or if we should approach things as in years past with the message board draft. (I've participated in several live drafts in other leagues the past few years, and they are very fast-paced and exciting. Plus, then you get squared away in one evening instead of over a few weeks. We can then plan ahead to have it next month to see a few things start to shake out over the beginning of spring training.)

I took the liberty of creating a league for us, since I figure that berstch is going to be too busy to arrange things this year. You may notice some changes in the way the league is set up. Those who were around last year are aware that there were issues regarding what kind of moves a manager should or should not be allowed to make. I tried to select the league settings to avoiding such problems (and the hard feelings that seem to develop as a result). First, here's the overall league set-up as it stands now:
League Name: RedSox2000.com Draft Type: Offline Draft Max Teams: 16 Scoring Type: Head-to-Head Player Universe: All baseball Max Moves: 50 Max Trades: No maximum Trade Reject Time: 2 Trade End Date: August 27, 2006 Waiver Time: 2 days Can't Cut List Provider: None Trade Review: League Votes Min Innings Pitched: 20 Weekly Deadline: Daily - Tomorrow Start Scoring on: Week 1 Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL Stat Categories: R, HR, RBI, SB, OBP, SLG, W, SV, ER, K, ERA, WHIP, K/BB
Now, a rundown on the most significant changes:[list=1:3191bfc71f][*:3191bfc71f]I have set the maximum number of moves to 50. This will minimize the number of moves made to pick up an extra start or get a hot player in the short-term. Given that I regularly make around 100 moves per season, this will affect me the most. [*:3191bfc71f]I pushed out the trade deadline to near the end of August, which gives folks a few more weeks for any last minute deals. This may not make much difference, considering that there have been very few trades, but what the heck. [*:3191bfc71f]I removed the Can't Cut List. At least a few teams were hurt last year because they were stuck with veteran players who were tanking in the second half, but whom Yahoo still had on their Can't Cut List. There were also pitchers who got rested near the end of the year, either to set them up for the playoffs, or because of injury concerns. Yahoo claims the list is there to avoid having poor teams dump all their good players, thereby upsetting the league balance. I'm not worried about that happening with us. [*:3191bfc71f]I upped the minimum number of innings per week from 7 to 20. Again, this probably won't make any difference, but it will ensure that a team uses at least a few starters a week. [*:3191bfc71f]Rather than have three generic outfielders, I set it up to have a LF, CF and RF. That should make things more interesting, and more realistic as well. [*:3191bfc71f]Along with the 5 hitting categories from last year, I also added slugging percentage. That will add more value to strong hitters that don't necessarily hit homers, or that play in pitchers' parks. [*:3191bfc71f]I added two more categories for pitching (K/BB and ER), mainly to further discourage picking up lots of extra starters. And although that means there's one more pitching category than hitting category, that is offset by the fact that pitchers will usually accrue wins or saves, but not both.[/list:o:3191bfc71f]There is one other change I would like to propose, but is one that cannot be enforced through Yahoo. Namely, when the playoffs hit, teams will be allowed to make roster changes only between playoff weeks, unless a player gets injured. This mimics what happens in the MLB playoffs, and ensures that a team wins with "the players that got them there". (NB: In the finals, there would be no roster moves allowed between the first and second week.) Now, if anyone objects to any of these rules, then go ahead and voice your opinion, and we'll see what the consensus is. It is my intend that anything that is not spelled out before the season will be permissable, if it is within Yahoo's rules. As far as signups for the league go, post your interest here and I'll send the password to you. (The 16 team limit and the offline draft are just temporary. If we want to have more teams, or want to do the draft differently, I can change the settings.)

Sounds fine to me...I'm in!

Sounds good to me. I can't be accused of not playing by the rules this time. It would allow me to play while waching my team a bit less. It would also help if people put a little more commitment to the league. I propose the message board draft, as I think that coordinating a live draft would be very tough. We just ned people to leave ists and be aware of when their turn is approaching. Last year Seantoo and I drafted gr8fldave a pretty darned good team. Hopefull nobody will be confused about how the draft will work.

I'm in, but I really, really, really don't want the message board draft. Last year I remember it taking a couple days. I think a live draft takes much less time and putting it on a Saturday or Sunday Morning/early afternoon should get almost everybody included. If someone can't be there, then they should pre-rank their players or have one of us draft for them using a list or judgement of their trusted person. Probably not me since I don't have too much time to do the research. But, I'll be ok this year, but watch out when I'm out of this year around / busy school thing, I'll have time to do real research and spend some time doing other things than just setting my line-up each week. Should be fun as every year, it's about time to get out of February and into April.

I'm in. I really don't see anything other than the MB draft being possible. It takes a while but it's worked doing it that way the last few seasons. If I'm in the minoroty then so be it, but I already know I'm not going to be able to put aside a weekend day to do an online draft. I work every Sunday, leaving Saturday as the only 'family day' I have on the weekend, and especially since on Saturday the 4th I'm holding my annual money league auction (15th year) that's going to take the whole day to finish, there's no way the 'better half' is going to like the idea of me doing it a second time.

Just as a point of information about the online Live Drafts (since I'm fine doing it either way) is that they get done pretty quick. Last year, I was in one and we got the entire thing done in less than two hours (closer to an hour and a half if I remember right), so we're not talking about an all-day affair, just a few hours to get it all done.

We'll I'll be back for a three-peat, however I'm joining the bigtime this year in another league, $50 at the start, $50 in the middle, & $50 at the end with the winner and runner-up getting payouts. Bob did have one disadvantage last year with the SOSH league taking up some of his fantasy B-Ball time and I know some others play in other leagues too. I'd bet I'm not likely to win again as Bob has all the formula's down to a science by now. One thing I do regret is that I let certain things get to me, not that I don't mean anything I printed at that time, but sometimes it's better not to say anything at all. Bob I like some of the new rules and I'll see if I can suggest any before the weekend is over if it's not to late already.

How did you do last year in the SOSH league?, you last mentioned that you made the finals.

Hey, good luck seantoo (and anyone else) in your prize league. Any suggestions you have are welcome and open to discussion. My choices in league settings were intended as a starting point, and can be changed any time before the draft. As far as the SOSH league (20 team H2H, auto-pick) is concerned, I did make the finals. I finished third during the regular season (just missing getting a bye), cruised through the quarters, but needed some last day miracles to win a tight battle in the semis. In the finals, everything (and I do mean everything) fell right for me, and I totally crushed my opponent for the championship. In hindsight, the auto-pick draft was the key to setting up a successful season. While I imagine most people didn't bother to adjust the Yahoo draft list, I did and it paid off, getting me several underrated starters and a slew of closers (which was beneficial with this league's settings). BTW folks, having an auto-pick draft is one option we could consider. Everyone would go in and set up a draft priority list (with Yahoo's existing ranking as the default). Once everyone was set, then I would flip the switch to have Yahoo do the draft. They would use the league's draft order and each team's player list, and automatically select the best player available off a team's list to fill an open spot/position on the roster. There's less control that way, and you won't necessarily be able to take advantage of a situation (like when I got Derrek Lee with a pick in the 90s). But the advantage is that it gets done immediately (and could wait until a few days before the start of the season). Any opinions?
